Lake Winnibigoshish
Walleye Fishing Guide

Lake Winnibigoshish — 'Winnie' to anyone who's fished it — is 58,544 acres of classic walleye factory in the Chippewa National Forest. Max depth 70 feet, a huge mud basin, miles of cabbage edges, and a Mississippi River connection make this one of MN's most consistent walleye lakes year after year.

Lake Layout & Key Structure

Mud basin in the middle (Tamarack Bay, Bena Bar), shallow sand flats around the perimeter, and the Mississippi River corridor on the east end. Cabbage weed edges in 8–14 ft are the bread-and-butter walleye structure.

Seasonal Walleye Tactics

🌱 Spring (Ice-out – June)

Cut Foot Sioux Bay opener bite is famous. 1/8 oz jig + minnow in 6–10 ft on the gravel and along the cabbage edges as it forms.

☀️ Summer (June – August)

Outside cabbage edges in 10–14 ft hold walleye through summer. Crawler harnesses at 1.0–1.5 mph. The big mud basin holds suspended walleye chasing perch — Lindy rig or troll.

🍂 Fall (September – Ice-up)

Cooler water pushes big walleye shallow. Sandbars and rock points on Bena Bar and Tamarack Bay produce. Crank or jig with shiners.

🧊 Winter (Ice fishing)

Winnie ice-fishing is legendary. Resorts plow roads to mid-lake mud humps. Target 18–26 ft with jigging spoons and a deadstick. Big perch make it a multi-species winter draw.

Regulations: Standard MN inland walleye regs. Special slot limits sometimes apply — verify before keeping fish.
