Lower Red Lake
Walleye Fishing Guide

Lower Red Lake is the deeper, more structured sister to Upper Red — 28,400 acres with max depths reaching 22 feet. Connected by the Red Lake River, it offers a blend of shallow flats and basin structure that produces big walleyes. As part of the legendary Red Lake fishery recovery, it's become a premier destination for trophy-class fish and consistent numbers.

Lake Layout & Key Structure

Central basin with scattered rises, sand and rock bottom, notable deep holes (16–22 ft), shoreline structure including points and shallow bays, plus the Red Lake River inlet creating current walleyes love. Lower Red's deeper profile and basin structure make it distinct from its northern neighbor.

Seasonal Walleye Tactics

🌱 Spring (Ice-out – June)

Post-spawn walleyes move to 6–12 ft on the shallow basin edges and river outlet. Jigs tipped with minnows or live crawlers. The Red Lake River mouth is a proven hotspot immediately after ice-out.

☀️ Summer (June – August)

Walleyes use both shallow flats (8–12 ft) and deeper basins (16–20 ft). Crawler harnesses work the flats; Lindy rigs and slip-bobbers target the transitions. Lower Red's depth structure concentrates fish in key zones.

🍂 Fall (September – Ice-up)

Trophy walleye season. Big females move to the basin structure and windswept points. Oversized minnow presentations (4–6 inch shiners) on jigs; trolling crankbaits or stick baits over deep structure pays dividends.

🧊 Winter (Ice fishing)

Deep-structure fishing becomes the pattern. 16–22 ft basin holes and rises hold walleyes. Glow jigs with shiner heads or fatheads; deadstick approach. The river current channel stays active all winter.

Regulations: Lower Red is managed under the same framework as Upper Red — higher walleye limits historically (5), with protective slot restrictions. Check current DNR regs before your trip.
